Remember when you were a kid and you would get in trouble and you started crying and your parents would look at you with that look they had, make that confused face and then in that authoritative tone they say, if you don’t stop crying, I’ll give you Something to Cry About!!!
Well, unfortunately, they weren’t talking about this B.T. Leigh’s rub by the same name but wow, I wish they were. B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About is, if you haven’t guessed by the name, a spicy rub. I was pleasantly surprised that this rub is actually spicy. I like spicy rubs, I usually make my own but this one hit home for me.
We tried the B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About on some slow-cooked Country Style pork ribs. I rubbed the pork ribs and let them sit overnight. I also prepared some with B.T Leigh’s Something for Rubbin (bbq rub) as well in case the Something to Cry About was too spicy for Mrs. Sauce. Before I started cooking them, I added some fresh rub. they were slow-cooked for two and a half hours and then I sauced some of them with a Memphis style BBQ sauce and I cranked up the heat to set and caramelize the sauce.
As you can see, the country style pork ribs came out looking beautiful. The taste test results are as follows:
The B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About rub was a hit. Mrs. Sauce liked the flavor of the rub but found it a little too spicy for her liking. Even on the one with the Memphis style sauce the spice and flavor came through. I personally liked the spice of the rub. I did get a nice burn from the unsauced rib and a good spice from the sauced rib. But don’t just think B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About is only about the heat, it’s not. It has a sweet element from Demerara sugar, a smokiness from the smoked paprika, and an overall good rub flavor from the typical rub seasonings also found in this concoction. Now, back to the spice in B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About rub, it comes from Guajillo, Ancho, Chipotle, and Cayenne powders and it also has some Carolina Reaper flakes in it as well. This combination makes for a well-rounded spicy experience that will satisfy both pepper heads like me and those who like it spicy every now and then too.
In Summary, B.T. Leigh’s Somethin to Cry About is like their other award-winning rubs, well balanced. It is spicy, but that is a huge positive for me. But when I say spicy, I don’t want you to think it is overwhelming, because it is not. However, if you are someone who does not typically eat spicy foods, this may catch you by surprise. I encourage you to give all the B.T. Leigh’s rubs a try, you will be glad you did.
