After I tried a few of the Far Out Foodz Seasonings during other Snack and Sauce review research, the quality and flavor made me order more. Read my first impression of Far Out Foodz seasonings here. A lot more, you will see more reviews for their seasonings in the future. One of those seasonings that caught my attention is the Far Out Foodz Big Guy Breakfast Sausage Mix. On a recent trip to an Amish market in Pennsylvania, we picked up some fresh ground pork from our favorite meat supplier at the market. I came home and made sausage patties. We had a lot going on that weekend so I sealed and froze the patties for later.
It’s Later: So it’s a few mornings later and my wife made some Immaculate Baking Company biscuits last night (BTW, these are quite possibly the best refrigerated canned biscuits IMO, go get some.) so it seems like a perfect morning for a sausage biscuit. Oh, one thing, I did add some Far Out Foods Cajun Sprinkle Extra Hot (try it on french fries) to a couple of the patties to have a spicy breakfast sausage. More on that later.
Since the breakfast sausage patties were frozen, I decided to prepare them in the air fryer for two reasons. One, they will go from frozen to cooked quickly, and two, I like a crunchy outside on my breakfast sausage patties, the air fryer can do both. As you can see by the pictures below, the air fryer did its job and they look delicious.
For this review, I tried the Far Out Foodz Big Guy Breakfast Sausage Mix sausage patty on a plain biscuit. I made them thick so I could get a great biscuit to sausage ratio, this is another advantage of being able to make your own sausage patties. I was taking pics of the sausage biscuit and Mrs. Sauce started eating her sausage without the biscuit. She said it was good and yes, she would eat it again. Now, take into consideration that my wife has very close to a chef’s palate and appreciates good quality ingredients. She has never really cared for any of the big brand pre-made breakfast sausage patties that I have cooked in the past. She prefers not to eat them, so her saying she would eat this Far Out Foodz Breakfast Sausage again is a big deal.
As for my thoughts, the sausage patty was impressive. The impression came from the quality of the ground pork used to make the patties and the balance of the ingredients in the seasoning. Most breakfast sausages go overboard on Sage and other spices, Far Out Foodz sausage has a great taste and yes. you can pick up the sage in the flavor profile but it is not overpowering, and you can also pick up the other ingredients if you look for them. Overall, the taste of the sausage is there but also allows you to taste the pork as well. I had a favorite grocery store massed produced breakfast sausage until this morning. The fresh taste and quality ingredients that Far Out Foodz uses in their Big Guy Breakfast Sausage Mix is a winner. You need to get some for when you have family and friends over for the holidays, they will ask you where they too can get the sausage you served them, in fact, this sausage mix will make a great stocking stuffer. I think my next step with this mix will be breakfast sausage tacos.
Now, let’s discuss the spicy sausage patty I made. I used the Big Guy Breakfast Sausage Mix and the Cajun Sprinkle Extra Spicy, this was a tasty patty but, there was just too much salt in it with the combination of both seasonings. You may like it if you can tolerate a heavy salt taste, I cannot. However, I did place the remainder of the patty on a biscuit and add some mustard to see if that hid the salty flavor, it did not. However, the mustard added a new dimension to the flavor profile and was tasty. Yes, I finished it, but in the future, I think I will just add extra cayenne pepper or chipotle to the Big Guys Breakfast Sausage Mix if I want to make spicy sausage patties.
And here is a fun fact that Far Out Foodz shared on twitter. Did you know that this sausage mix was made specifically for one of their customers, BigGuy Outdoors? You can also find BigGuy Outdoors on twitter.
